On Period Instruments

Decorations were very popular during the Baroque period. They do not affect the sound, but we enjoy preserving these traditional techniques simply for the pleasure of making them.

Two common methods

The pictures below show two common methods.

The more elaborate technique involves cutting a narrow channel into the wood and inlaying a contrasting strip of wood. This method requires great precision but produces crisp, durable lines. In the example below, it is used to frame the tailpiece.

A simpler technique is to incise the pattern directly into the surface and fill the grooves with a paste made from glue and fine ebony dust. Once the surface has been scraped and polished, the design appears as a dark line without the need for a separate inlay. Because this technique is somewhat easier, we use it for more intricate patterns, such as the small ornament shown in the centre.

For Lovers of Simplicity

Not everyone enjoys a little Baroque extravagance. If you prefer a more understated look, we are equally happy to fit your baroque instrument with a plain ebony veneer. After all, simplicity has a beauty of its own.
